I used to just turn up. This Summer, I never did.

This summer's biggest events show fans expect digital and physical experiences to feel like one journey. Here's what brands can learn from it.

People at a festival

I've spent a good chunk of my summer at festivals, events and even a few World Cup fan zones and the thing that's struck me every single time isn't what happened once I got there. It's how much happens before I even leave the house.

I'm checking set times, building a running order, seeing who else is going, watching clips from the night before. None of that used to exist. You just turned up. Now the planning is part of the experience and arguably the experience starts there.

This was the summer turning up stopped being enough

Glasgow just hosted a Commonwealth Games. The World Cup rolled across three countries. Wimbledon did what Wimbledon does. Stadiums and festival fields have barely gone quiet since June.

It's been a packed summer. And it's quietly proven a point we've been making for a while: the divide between digital and physical experience isn't just blurring but for most people, it's already gone.

Nobody arrives cold anymore

Fans didn't just turn up to Glasgow or the World Cup fan zones and watch. They arrived primed hyped by content, stats, build-up and second-screen chatter for days beforehand. They stayed engaged through live apps, real-time updates and AR moments inside the venue and they kept going long after the final whistle, through highlights, reels and community debate.

That's not a nice-to-have anymore. It's the baseline expectation. Our own research found that 83% of 25 to 34-year-olds expect a brand's digital and physical experience to feel like one connected thing, not two separate efforts bolted together. Yet one in five consumers say they've never had a brand successfully build excitement before they arrived.

That gap is exactly where this summer's biggest moments won.

The event doesn’t start at kick-off

Wimbledon's coverage is a masterclass in this: data-rich storytelling before a ball is hit, real-time stats during play, and instantly shareable moments the second it's over. The World Cup fan zones ran the same playbook with physical spaces designed to be lived through a phone as much as a ticket. Music's biggest summer tours did it too, turning queues, merch and encores into content in real time.

The pattern is consistent: the physical venue becomes the stage, and the digital layer becomes the amplifier. Neither works as well without the other.

The tech that wins is invisible

The best examples this summer didn't feel like technology at all, they felt like magic. Nobody at Glasgow was thinking about the AI behind their personalised content or the systems moving 74 nations of athletes and millions of fans smoothly through ten days of competition. It just felt seamless.

That's the real lesson for brands watching from the sidelines that none of this is about stacking on more screens. It's about removing friction until the experience feels effortless and then layering in the moments that make people feel seen, whether that's a stat with their name on it or content that follows them home.

The takeaway

Every major brand and event now competing for attention is being measured against Commonwealth Games-level expectations of connected experience, whether they're a stadium, a hotel, or a theme park.

The organisations translating that into commercial impact are the ones treating digital and physical as one experience, not two departments. Everyone else risks becoming background noise to a summer people are increasingly living through their phones as much as in person.

The future isn't digital or physical. This summer just made that impossible to ignore.
